A Lifetime Devoted to Livestock: Ömer Tömek
Two obituaries in one day. On Thursday, November 11th, my uncle Kazım Yıldırım, who had been undergoing treatment for a long time, passed away. My uncle, who spent his life working away from home, had settled in Menemen, İzmir, nearly 40 years ago so his children could get an education. His move to İzmir opened a new path. A large portion of the 35 households in our village of Kayaçı in Mazgirt, Tunceli, relocated to Menemen, İzmir. At my uncle’s funeral, I saw the faces of relatives and neighbors from our village—where I was born, raised, and spent my childhood—aged but largely unchanged. We bid farewell to my uncle as he embarked on his eternal journey.
While at my uncle’s funeral, news arrived of the passing of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ömer Tömek. A scientist who dedicated his life to the livestock sector, Dr. Tömek contributed his knowledge and expertise to the establishment and operation of numerous livestock enterprises across Turkey. He was also one of my most trusted sources for news and
information.
Since I began writing about agriculture in 1996, I had known him, always sought his counsel, and benefited from his wisdom and experience through weekly, often lengthy phone calls. Ömer Tömek, whose insights informed my articles, is an irreplaceable loss for Turkey’s livestock industry.
